自信 and 誇り: confidence and pride

Distinguish belief in one's ability from pride in something valued through common sentence patterns.

Belief in ability

自信, read じしん, is confidence in one's ability or judgment. expresses confidence in explaining something in Japanese.

says that confidence is lacking. A lack of confidence does not itself prove a lack of actual ability.

Something valued with pride

expresses pride in one's work.

describes this work as the speaker's pride. It expresses the value placed on the work rather than predicting whether the person can create it well.

Two feelings can coexist

says that the person still lacks confidence in their skills but takes pride in this work.

自信を失う means to lose confidence. When comparing it with 誇りを持つ, first identify what the feeling concerns rather than treating the words as different strengths of one emotion.

Can someone lack confidence in their skills while taking pride in their work?

Show the answer and why

Yes. 自信 concerns belief in ability or judgment, while 誇り concerns taking pride in something. Both evaluations can hold at once.
