至る: a reached conclusion and a path to the summit
Distinguish the actual conclusion reached after a long discussion from the destination of a path that passes through a forest.
A reached result and a route's destination
至る (いたる) means to reach or arrive at. The discussion example reports a reached conclusion, while the path example describes where a route leads.
結論に至った gives an actual result of the discussion. 山頂に至る道 modifies a path leading to the mountaintop. Identify both the endpoint and the object being described.
The conclusion and the forest path
「長い議論の末に一つの結論に至った。」 (After a long discussion, we reached a conclusion.) The long discussion actually reached one conclusion. 一つの結論 identifies that result, without supplying unanimous agreement or approval.
「山頂に至る道は森の中を通る。」 (The path to the mountaintop passes through the forest.) The path leading to the mountaintop is what passes through the forest. 至る modifies 道; the sentence does not report that a person arrived at the summit.
Separate a result from a route description
The discussion sentence with 至った reports a reached result. The sentence with 至る道 gives a route's destination and describes the forest through which the path passes. They concern different objects despite sharing an endpoint relation.
Keep the path description about the route rather than adding a climber's arrival. For the discussion, preserve the actual reached conclusion without assuming how every participant felt about it.
Does the sentence about the path to the summit report that a climber arrived there?
Show the answer and why
It describes a path leading to the mountaintop and passing through a forest. 至る modifies 道; it does not report a person's arrival.
