本気: Pursuing a Goal and Conditional Practice Advice

Compare seriously pursuing a singing career with encouragement under If you are serious. Distinguish an ongoing goal, an unconfirmed condition, and proposed practice.

A goal pursued seriously

本気 (ほんき) means seriousness or true intention. 「彼は冗談ではなく本気で歌手を目指している。」 — “He is not joking; he is seriously pursuing a career as a singer.” 冗談ではなく contrasts the goal with a joke, and 目指している describes the ongoing pursuit of becoming a singer.

Pursuing that goal seriously does not report a completed debut or assured success. This example describes intention in a stated goal, rather than proving sincerity from someone's expression.

Practice under an unconfirmed condition

「本気なら、まず毎日少しずつ練習を続けよう。」 — “If you are serious, first keep practicing a little every day.” 本気なら means if you are serious. The English quotation uses keep practicing as an instruction under that condition. The Japanese 続けよう and Korean translation propose continuing practice together.

The condition does not establish that the other person's intention has already been confirmed. The encouragement also does not report that practice has started or is already continuing every day.

A statement and a conditional proposal

The first example states that he is seriously pursuing a career as a singer. The second gives encouragement conditional on being serious. They are separate examples, rather than a single person's sequence of actions.

Keep the Japanese and Korean proposal and the English conditional imperative as quoted. Their differing forms do not supply evidence that the condition holds or the suggested practice has been carried out.

Does encouragement to practice under 本気なら establish both serious intention and practice already begun?

Show the answer and why

No. It gives encouragement under the condition if you are serious, without establishing the condition or a start to practice. The separate example of pursuing a singing career does not report that the goal has been achieved.
