骨組み and 骨格: frames, skeletons, and conceptual frameworks
Compare a house frame and a bird’s skeleton with frameworks for a presentation and a project. Both words also have abstract uses for an organizing framework.
A frame and a presentation framework
骨組み (ほねぐみ) means a framework or structure. 「大工が家の木製の骨組みを組み立てた。」 means “The carpenter assembled the wooden frame of the house.” The carpenter assembled the physical wooden frame of the house.
「発表の骨組みを決めてから資料を集めた。」 means “We decided the presentation's framework before gathering materials.” The presentation’s framework was decided before materials were gathered.
A skeleton and a project framework
骨格 (こっかく) means a skeleton or framework. 「標本を見ながら鳥の骨格を写生した。」 means “We sketched a bird's skeleton while examining the specimen.” The specimen was examined while the bird’s physical skeleton was sketched.
「企画の骨格が固まったので、細部の検討に入る。」 means “Now that the project's basic framework is set, we will begin reviewing the details.” The project’s basic framework is set, and reviewing the details is the next step.
Physical objects and abstract frameworks
The house’s 骨組み and bird’s 骨格 name a physical frame and skeleton. A presentation’s 骨組み and project’s 骨格 name abstract frameworks supporting the details.
A wood-versus-bone distinction would miss the abstract uses. The framework meanings can overlap for presentations and projects; follow what each framework organizes.
Do a presentation’s 骨組み and a bird’s 骨格 name the same kind of object?
Show the answer and why
The presentation’s 骨組み is an abstract framework for its content, while the bird’s 骨格 is the physical skeleton being sketched. 骨格 can also be abstract, as in the project’s basic framework.
