褒める and 注意する: praise and caution

Compare praise with being careful or cautioning someone.

Recognizing good work

褒める (ほめる) means praising good work or a quality. 「先生が私の作文を褒めました」 says that the teacher praised the speaker's composition. Praise can target a work or action as well as a person.

「結果だけでなく努力も褒めました」 means praising the effort as well as the result. Translating only a positive result would omit one target of the praise.

Being careful yourself

注意 (ちゅうい) means attention or caution. 「足元に注意してください」 asks someone to watch their step, not to scold another person.

「注意して読みました」 means reading carefully. The following form helps distinguish warning a person from the attentive manner of an action.

Cautioning another person

「先生が学生に注意しました」 can mean that the teacher cautioned the student. With 注意する, distinguish whether に marks a hazard or a person and consider the actual speaking situation.

「危ないので注意しました」 can mean being careful or cautioning someone because of danger. Without the omitted participant and context, do not force one interpretation.

Is the speaker giving praise in 「褒められました」?

Show the answer and why

No. It is passive: the speaker was praised. Who gave the praise must be specified separately.
