保護 and 見守る: protection and watching over
Compare a lost dog's protection and needed equipment for paintings with watching over a child and a cherry tree. Read targets and actions while preserving the overlap between watching over and protecting.
Taking in a dog and needing protection for paintings
「公園で迷子の犬を保護した。」 (We took in a dog that had become lost in the park.)
Another sentence says equipment is needed to protect valuable paintings from humidity. Taking in the dog does not report returning it to its owner, and needed equipment is not necessarily already installed.
Watching over a child and an old cherry tree
「親は子どもが初めて自転車に乗る姿を見守った。」 (The parents watched over their child as the child rode a bicycle for the first time.)
Local residents have also watched over an old cherry tree for many years. The targets differ, but both scenes use 見守る. A child's first bicycle ride does not establish complete mastery of riding.
Watching over can overlap with protection
見守る includes watching over or keeping an eye on someone. Watching the child need not exclude a protective role; the words do not make observation and protection incompatible.
The dog, paintings, child and tree have different actions or states associated with them. Read protection carried out, protection equipment needed and watching over separately, without restricting these words to human targets.
Does 見守った necessarily exclude a protective meaning when the parents watch their child?
Show the answer and why
No. Watching over can include a protective role. Here the parents watch their child's first bicycle ride; another example describes residents watching over an old cherry tree.
