日付 and 曜日: calendar dates and days of the week

Compare a date on a form with a meeting’s day of the week, checking which information is actually supplied by a month and day.

Which calendar date

日付, read ひづけ, means a calendar date. asks for today’s date to be written on an application form.

gives the date as June 10. It does not supply a year or a day of the week.

Which day of the week

曜日, read ようび, identifies a day of the week, such as Monday or Tuesday. asks on which day of the week the meeting takes place.

says that the group meets every Wednesday. This differs from specifying a single calendar date.

Checking both kinds of information

says that both the date and the day of the week were checked. Two checked items are explicitly identified.

says that the date is known, but the day of the week has not yet been checked. Knowing the date is not a report of completing both checks.

also tell you the meeting’s day of the week?

Show the answer and why

Not by itself. Only the month and day are supplied; additional information such as the year and a calendar is needed to identify the day of the week.
