昼寝, 居眠り, and 寝坊: a ten-minute nap, dozing, and sleeping late
Read the nap’s ten-minute duration, dozing on a train or in a meeting, and oversleeping on holidays. Keep 十分 as a length of time in the lunch example.
A ten-minute nap and a cat at the window
means “I took a ten-minute nap after lunch.” 十分だけ limits the nap to ten minutes. Reading 十分 as a judgment that the sleep was sufficient would replace the stated duration with an evaluation.
means “The cat is happily napping by the window.” The cat by the window is the napping subject. The examples give different subjects and contexts without making every nap a planned human activity.
Dozing on a train and during a meeting
means “I accidentally dozed off on the warm train.” This is a particular case of accidentally dozing on a heated train. うっかり supplies the unintentional context in this sentence.
means “After being reprimanded for sleeping during the meeting, I regretted staying up late the night before.” The speaker was reprimanded for dozing during the meeting and reflected on staying up late the night before. Read that stated response without turning it into a universal cause of dozing or a diagnosis.
Going back to sleep and sleeping late on holidays
means “I turned off the alarm, went back to sleep, and overslept.” Turning off the alarm and going back to sleep leads to oversleeping in this example. 寝坊した names that result rather than every instance of napping or dozing.
means “My younger brother always sleeps late on holidays.” The younger brother’s repeated sleeping late is limited to holidays. The sentence does not extend the pattern to every day, including ordinary weekdays.
What does 十分だけ specify about the nap after lunch?
Show the answer and why
It specifies a duration of ten minutes, expressed as “a ten-minute nap” in this example’s English translation. 十分だけ gives the length of the nap rather than judging that the sleep was sufficient.
