発表 and 通知: presenting content and notifying a recipient
Compare announcements of research results or successful applicants with notices about reservations or school closure by content, recipient, and form rather than audience size.
Presenting or announcing information
「研究の結果を来月の会議で発表する。」 states that research results will be presented at next month’s meeting. The content is the research results, and the stated future setting does not describe a completed past presentation.
「合格者の発表を掲示板で確認した。」 describes checking an announcement of successful applicants on a notice board. It does not identify the person checking it as a successful applicant.
Notifying someone of needed information
「予約が確定すると、携帯電話に通知が届く。」 links confirmation of a reservation with arrival of a phone notification. The conditional relationship does not establish that a reservation is now confirmed or a notification already received.
「学校から休校の通知を受け取り、予定を変更した。」 describes receiving a school-closure notice from the school and changing plans. Read the source, content, and action following receipt.
The focus of content, recipient, and form
発表 focuses on presenting or announcing information; 通知 focuses on informing a recipient of something they need to know. Neither requires an exclusive many-person versus one-person audience.
Read the meeting, notice board, phone, or school notice together with its content. Identify what is presented or notified and the roles of its setting and source.
What content and communication focus do the research-results 発表 and school-closure 通知 have? Can audience size alone distinguish them?
Show the answer and why
発表 focuses on presenting research results at a meeting. 通知 focuses on informing a recipient of the school closure. Read the stated setting, source, and content without making a many-person versus one-person split the defining rule.
