Department Placement, Taking Office, and Timing

Compare an actual department assignment and a handover after next month's placement was decided with a chair's appointment and a planned theater-company appointment. Preserve each stage.

An assigned new employee and a handover's start

配属 (はいぞく) means assignment or placement. — “The new employee was assigned to the desired department.” The new employee received placement in the desired department. Preserve the passive relationship in 配属された.

— “Next month's placement was decided, so the handover began.” Next month's placement was decided, and the handover began. A decision and preparation do not report completion of that future placement.

Celebrating a chair and a planned theater-company role

就任 (しゅうにん) refers to taking office or an appointment. — “Everyone applauded the new chair's appointment.” Everyone applauded the new chair's appointment.

— “She will become head of the theater company next month.” The Japanese states a plan to take the theater-company role next month. Preserve 予定 and 来月 even though the English quotation expresses the future with will.

Distinguish placement, office, and the reported stage

配属 focuses on placement in an organizational department, while 就任 focuses on taking a role such as chair or head. The actual placement of the new employee differs from the decision about next month.

The handover and the planned appointment concern preparation or a future plan. Keep them separate from the chair's celebration and read each sentence's own timing and reported action.

In 配属 to the desired department and 就任 as the theater company's representative, what is each person connected to?

Show the answer and why

配属 connects the new employee to the desired department; 就任 connects a person to the representative role they will take. The new employee's placement has occurred, while the theater-company appointment is planned for next month. In the separate placement example, deciding next month's placement and beginning the handover do not mean that future placement is complete. The planned appointment is also distinct from already taking office.
