配慮 and 遠慮: changing conditions, declining, and refraining

Compare shorter construction hours and larger letters with declining more tea or requesting restraint, distinguishing a changed condition from a requested action.

Changing conditions with consideration

配慮 (はいりょ) means consideration or care. “周囲の住民に配慮して工事の時間を短くした。” describes shortening construction hours out of consideration for nearby residents.

“読みやすさに配慮して文字を大きくした。” describes making letters larger for ease of reading. Both examples identify what was considered and the time or letter size changed as a result.

Declining an offer and requesting restraint

遠慮 (えんりょ) refers here to declining an offer or restraint. In “お茶のお代わりを勧められたが遠慮した。”, the speaker was offered more tea but declined.

“夜遅いので大きな音を出すのは遠慮してください。” asks someone to refrain from loud noise because it is late at night. Unlike the completed decline of tea, this is a request to the listener.

Changing a condition and refraining oneself

Compare 配慮 expressed through adjusting construction hours or letter size with 遠慮 expressed through declining an offer or requesting restraint. Identify what is changed or not done.

Declining or refraining can also involve consideration for others. Do not make the words opposing moral judgments, and do not read 遠慮してください as proof that the listener already became quiet.

Does 遠慮してください establish that the listener has already reduced the noise?

Show the answer and why

No such result is stated. It is a request to refrain from loud noise. 遠慮した in the tea example instead reports an actual decline, so distinguish the request from the action already taken.
