激戦: fierce contests without an unstated winner
Read a contest whose winner remained uncertain and a soldier surviving fierce fighting, keeping intensity and individual survival separate from victory.
激戦 (げきせん): a contest uncertain to the end
「決勝戦は最後まで勝敗の分からない激戦となった。」 (“The final became a fierce contest whose outcome remained uncertain to the end.”) The contest is fierce enough that the winner remains uncertain until the end. The description alone does not identify the victorious side.
The intensity of play and its final outcome are separate information. Not knowing the winner until the end also does not mean the contest was a draw.
A soldier surviving fierce fighting
「物語の主人公は激戦を生き延びた兵士だ。」 (“The story's protagonist is a soldier who survived a fierce battle.”) This reports an individual soldier's survival. Keep that personal result separate from the outcome of the entire battle.
The sentence does not state that the soldier's side won, the war ended, or all the other soldiers survived. Individual survival cannot supply those broader results.
Check intensity and outcome independently
激戦 focuses on a fierce contest or battle. It is not a replacement for a word naming defeat or a specific winning result.
The unstated contest winner and the soldier's survival belong to separate sentences. Sharing 激戦 does not turn the scenes into one event or give them one outcome.
Does a soldier surviving 激戦 establish that the soldier's side won the battle?
Show the answer and why
No. It reports the soldier's survival only. Victory, the end of the war, and other people's survival cannot be added.
