吹き抜け: an open space connecting windows and lighting
Read 吹き抜け for an open atrium above an entrance or a double-height space holding a light. Distinguish the space from the windows seen across it and the light hanging within it.
An open space across which windows are visible
吹き抜け (ふきぬけ) means an open atrium or double-height space. 「玄関の吹き抜け越しに二階の窓が見える。」 means “The second-floor windows are visible across the open atrium above the entrance.” 吹き抜け越しに describes the relationship of seeing windows across that space.
吹き抜け does not name the windows themselves. The open space above the entrance and the second-floor windows visible across it are different targets.
A light hanging in the space
「吹き抜けに吊るした照明が広間を明るく照らした。」 means “A light hanging in the double-height space brightly illuminated the large room.” The hanging light is the subject of the past-tense 照らした, with the large room as its target.
吹き抜けに names where the light was hung. 広間 names the large room illuminated by that light.
The space and objects related to it
In both examples, 吹き抜け names the open space. The windows are visible across it, while the light is an object hanging within it.
The first example connects the space above the entrance with visible second-floor windows. The second connects a suspended light with the room it illuminated. Read the space name and the roles of the windows and light together.
Does 吹き抜け in 吹き抜け越しに二階の窓が見える name the windows themselves?
Show the answer and why
No. It names the open space extending upward, across which the second-floor windows are visible. Keep the space separate from the windows being seen.
