絵 and 写真: drawn pictures and photographs

Choose medium-specific verbs and identify who recorded what.

Drawing a picture

絵 (え) means picture or drawing. 「山の絵を描きました」 means drawing a mountain picture. 描く is read かく here.

「子供が描いた絵」 identifies a picture drawn by a child. It does not necessarily depict that child.

Taking a photograph

写真 (しゃしん) means photograph. 「山の写真を撮りました」 means taking a photograph of a mountain.

「友人に写真を撮ってもらいました」 describes receiving a friend's help in taking a photograph. The friend took it.

Resemblance versus medium

「写真のような絵です」 describes a picture that resembles a photograph. Despite that resemblance, the sentence classifies it as a picture.

「絵ではなく、写真を飾りました」 says photographs rather than drawings were displayed. Distinguish the displayed medium.
