道具 and 機械: tools and machines
Compare tools used for tasks with machines that operate through mechanisms.
A tool used for a purpose
道具 (どうぐ) means tools used for a task. 「掃除の道具をそろえました」 means gathering cleaning tools. The word alone does not determine their power source.
「道具を使わずに作りました」 means making something without tools. Making was completed; the negation applies to tool use.
An operating mechanism
機械 (きかい) is a machine operating through mechanisms. 「機械を動かしました」 says that the speaker operated the machine. The object distinguishes it from moving a person's body.
「機械の使い方を習いました」 means learning how to use a machine. It does not imply building it or being able to repair every malfunction.
Overlap between function and structure
A machine can serve as a tool, so the categories are not always separate objects. 「この機械は便利な道具です」 evaluates the machine's function as a useful tool.
「道具はありますが、使い方が分かりません」 means having the tools but not knowing how to use them. Ownership and practical knowledge are distinct.
Does 「機械が動きません」 mean the user is not working?
Show the answer and why
No. It says the machine is not operating. Its cause and the user's actions are separate.
