男性 and 女性: categories in descriptions and notices

Read nouns for men and women alongside expressions of targeting and inclusion.

Referring to men

男性 (だんせい) means a man or men. 「受付に男性が一人います」 says there is one man at reception.

「男性の参加者が増えました」 says the number of male participants increased. It does not necessarily say the total number of participants rose.

Referring to women

女性 (じょせい) means a woman or women. 「女性の店員に聞きました」 means asking a female shop assistant.

「女性が書いた本です」 identifies a book written by a woman. The writer and the intended readership are separate information.

Targeting and inclusion

「女性向けの雑誌」 means a magazine primarily aimed at women. 向け alone does not prohibit others from reading it.

「男性も女性も参加しました」 says both men and women participated. It does not say the two groups had equal numbers.

Does 「女性向けの雑誌」 by itself prohibit men from reading the magazine?

Show the answer and why

No. It describes the primary readership, not a prohibition.
