段取り and 即興: planned arrangements and improvised performance
Compare arranging work and tools with improvising music or acting in response to applause or a forgotten line. Read preparation and performance together without assuming that improvisation means a lack of skill or planning.
Arranging the order and preparation in advance
段取り (だんどり) includes arrangements and a work plan. 「作業の段取りを決めてから道具を並べた。」 means “After planning the workflow, I laid out the tools.” Planning the work comes before laying out the tools in the stated sequence.
「彼は段取りがよく、会議を時間通りに進めた。」 means “His preparations were so organized that the meeting ran on time.” Read the connection between preparation and proceeding on time. This example does not make every prepared activity a guaranteed success.
Improvising in response to applause or a forgotten line
即興 (そっきょう) includes improvisation and impromptu performance. 「演奏者は客席の拍手に応えて即興で曲を奏でた。」 means “The musician responded to the applause with an improvised piece.” The applause is the trigger for an improvised musical performance.
「台詞を忘れた俳優が即興の演技で場面をつないだ。」 means “The actor forgot a line and kept the scene going through improvisation.” The actor responds to the forgotten line by continuing the scene. Do not remove that stated continuation or turn it into a report of failure of the whole performance.
Preparation and improvisation can occur together
For 段取り, read how a planned order and preparation connect to the work; for 即興, read what trigger an improvised performance responds to. An activity with preparation can also include improvisation. The word 即興 does not by itself establish that no preparation or skill existed.
In the tools example, retain the work arrangements made before the objects were laid out, rather than reducing the scene to tidying alone. In the performance examples, retain applause or the forgotten line as the trigger. Improvisation does not automatically mean impulsive, careless, or failed performance.
How do 段取り and 即興 differ in laying out tools after planning the work and continuing a scene after forgetting a line?
Show the answer and why
段取り focuses on the planned order and preparations before the tools are laid out. 即興 focuses on performance created in response to the forgotten line. Improvisation alone does not establish missing preparation or skill, or failure of every part of the performance.
