挑発 and 抗議: provocation and protest about a problem
Read deliberate provocative speech and continued conversation alongside protests about a ruling and construction noise.
挑発: continued conversation and deliberate remarks
挑発 (ちょうはつ) means provocation. 「相手の挑発に乗らず、冷静に話を続けた。」 means “I calmly continued the conversation without giving in to the other person's provocation.” The speaker calmly continued without giving in to provocation.
「彼はわざと挑発的な言葉を投げかけた。」 means “He deliberately made a provocative remark.” わざと marks the deliberate nature of his provocative remark.
抗議: an unfair ruling and construction noise
抗議 (こうぎ) means protest. 「不公平な判定に選手が抗議した。」 means “The athlete protested the unfair ruling.” The athlete protested the unfair ruling; no change to it is reported.
「住民は工事の騒音について正式に抗議した。」 means “Residents formally protested the construction noise.” The residents' formal protest concerns construction noise, with no resolution stated.
Separate actions from other people's responses
The examples differ in what the speech or protest targets.
A calm conversation is not a universal response strategy, and a protest does not establish acceptance.
Does 抗議した about the athlete establish that the ruling changed?
Show the answer and why
No. Only the protest is reported. The residents' noise protest likewise gives no resolution or acceptance result.
