Research Literature and Materials for Presentations or Claims
Compare literature collected and accounts compared with materials gathered for a presentation and a statement attributed to data. Follow sources and reference use without treating collection or citation as independent verification.
Previous research gathered and accounts compared
文献 (ぶんけん) means literature or written sources. — “I gathered literature on previous research at the library.” Literature on previous research was gathered at the library. Gathering it does not establish completed reading of every work or verification of the previous research.
— “We compared several sources to identify differences in their accounts.” Several sources were compared to identify differences in their accounts. The comparison concerns what the sources say, without a stated final judgment that one source is correct.
Presentation materials and an attributed statement
資料 (しりょう) means materials or data. — “I gathered the materials needed for the presentation into one box.” Materials needed for a presentation were gathered into one box. The purpose and arrangement are stated, without a report that the presentation has already taken place.
— “According to this data, the two proposals have something in common.” The common feature of the two proposals is attributed to this data. によれば preserves that source relationship; it does not itself report independent verification of the claim.
Relate the documented source to its reference use
Literature on previous research can serve as reference material. Do not make 文献 and 資料 mutually exclusive: compare the accounts in literature with the role of materials used in presenting or supporting a statement.
Collecting literature and gathering presentation materials belong to different examples. Collection does not establish reading everything, and a statement attributed to data does not establish that every part of the source was independently checked.
What roles do 文献 collected at the library and 資料 gathered into a box for a presentation show?
Show the answer and why
The first identifies previous research collected as literature; the second identifies material assembled for use in a presentation. Literature can also be material, but collecting it does not establish complete reading or verification, or a presentation already delivered.
