宛名 and 住所: recipient details and addresses

Distinguish the person addressed from location information on mail.

Naming the recipient

宛名 (あてな) means the addressee's name or recipient designation. 「封筒に宛名を書きました」 says the recipient's name was written on the envelope.

「宛名を確認してください」 asks someone to check the addressee details. It does not establish actual receipt.

The location given by an address

住所 (じゅうしょ) means address. 「新しい住所を知らせました」 means informing someone of a new address.

「住所は同じですが、宛名が違います」 says the address is the same but the addressee differs. A shared location does not imply the same person.

The scope of an error

「住所を書き忘れました」 means forgetting to write the address. It does not say the name was also omitted.

「宛名の漢字を間違えました」 identifies an error in the kanji of the addressee's name. Follow the nouns to identify the erroneous information.

Must identical addresses have identical 宛名?

Show the answer and why
