暗記 and 理解: Memorizing and understanding meaning

Compare remembering a poem with understanding meaning, mechanisms, or cultural differences. Read memorization and understanding as complementary focuses while preserving the poem example's Japanese and English wording.

Memorizing the material

暗記 means memorization. The poem example reports memorizing and presenting it; the Japanese presentation does not by itself specify a compulsory recital without a written text.

「短い詩を暗記して発表しました。」 (I memorized a short poem and recited it.) The supplied English example says “recited,” while the Japanese 発表 reports a presentation. Keep those expressions within their sentences rather than making oral recitation a required feature of 暗記.

Understanding meaning or a mechanism

理解 concerns understanding meaning, a mechanism, or a cultural difference. Its examples relate understanding to a diagram or to listening carefully to another person.

「図解を読むと、機械が動く仕組みを理解しやすくなります。」 (A diagram makes it easier to understand how the machine works.) The diagram helps make the mechanism easier to understand. Easier understanding does not report that every aspect of the mechanism has already been understood.

The sentence values both learning focuses

「暗記だけでなく意味を理解することも大切だ。」 (Understanding the meaning, not just memorizing, is also important.) 「だけでなく」 and 「も」 value both memorization and understanding meaning. The sentence does not dismiss memorization or say the two cannot occur together.

Separate retaining the material from grasping its meaning or mechanism without treating them as incompatible learning activities. A diagram or careful listening helps understanding rather than guaranteeing its completion.

How does 暗記だけでなく意味を理解することも大切だ relate memorization to understanding meaning?

Show the answer and why

It says that understanding meaning is important in addition to memorizing. It neither rejects memorization nor treats memorization as proof of completed understanding. Preserve the separate Japanese presentation and English “recited” wording without defining 暗記 as mandatory recitation without a text.
