味わう: Tasting food and savoring a poem’s lingering impression

Compare tasting regional food slowly with savoring a poem’s lingering impression. Follow 料理 and 詩の余韻 as the objects and preserve the past versus nonpast wording.

Food tasted slowly

「旅先で土地の料理をゆっくり味わった。」 — “I slowly tasted the local food during the trip.” 土地の料理をゆっくり味わった reports tasting regional food slowly in the past. The object is food, and ゆっくり gives the manner.

Read the object and action of the verb 味わう, rather than treating it as the noun 味. The manner in this example does not prescribe a practice for every meal.

A poem’s lingering impression

「静かな場所で詩の余韻を味わう。」 — “I savor the lingering impression of the poem in a quiet place.” 詩の余韻 is the object: the poem’s lingering impression is savored. This is not tasting food or physically consuming the poem.

静かな場所で gives the place, and 味わう is nonpast. Do not merge it with the food example’s past 味わった or add completed savoring.

The object selects the sense

料理を味わう describes tasting food; 詩の余韻を味わう describes savoring what a work leaves with the reader. Identifying the object distinguishes the food sensation from appreciation of a lingering impression.

Keep ゆっくり, 静かな場所で, and the different 味わった and 味わう tenses attached to their own examples. The abstract object 詩の余韻 should not become a food taste or smell.

What is savored in 「静かな場所で詩の余韻を味わう」?

Show the answer and why

The object is the poem’s lingering impression, 詩の余韻. 味わう is nonpast here; unlike the food example’s past 味わった, it does not report a completed action in the past.
