味 and 香り: describing taste and aroma separately
Compare taste perceived in the mouth with aroma perceived through smell.
Describing taste
味 (あじ) refers to taste. 「このスープは塩の味がします」 says that the soup tastes of salt.
「味が薄いです」 describes a weak or bland taste. It does not describe the food as physically thin.
Describing aroma
香り (かおり) means fragrance or aroma and is often used for pleasant smells. 「花の香りがします」 says there is a floral scent.
「コーヒーの香りは強いですが、味は薄いです」 says the coffee has a strong aroma but a weak taste. Aroma intensity does not guarantee taste intensity.
Figurative meaning and separate senses
「この絵には味があります」 figuratively describes the painting as having distinctive charm. It does not refer to tasting the painting.
「味を確かめてから塩を足します」 means checking the taste before adding salt. This is distinct from smelling the aroma.
