Study notes

1. Origins, structure, and basic meaning

  • Structure: Add どうですか to a verb's たら form to suggest an action to the listener.
  • Basic usage: 分からないところは、先生に聞いたらどうですか。 recommends asking the teacher about what is unclear.

2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions

  • Suggesting a future action
    • 聞いたらどうですか can recommend an action not yet taken. Distinguish it from 聞いてどうでしたか, which asks how things went after asking.
  • Politeness and possible intrusiveness
    • 少し休んだらどうですか suggests a solution but can sound intrusive depending on the situation. Shortening it to 休んだら? makes the tone more conversational and direct.
