Concludes matter-of-factly that if the preceding course does not work, taking another action will be sufficient.

Examples

この案を断られたら、別の案を出すまでのことだ。

If this proposal is rejected, all we have to do is submit another one.

失敗したら、やり直すまでのことだ。

If I fail, I will simply try again.

電車がなければ、タクシーで行くまでのことだ。

If there are no trains, all we have to do is take a taxi.

Structure: までのことだ after a dictionary-form verb reduces the response to that one action and conveys matter-of-fact resolve.
Basic usage: 失敗したら、やり直すまでのことだ。 states that the speaker will simply start over if the attempt fails.

Dictionary and past forms
- やり直すまでのことだ presents a future response, while 聞かれたから答えたまでのことだ explains that an earlier answer had no further significance. The preceding verb's tense distinguishes a response from an explanation of past conduct.
