Follows a place noun with a movement verb to mark the route or point through which someone passes.

Examples

毎朝、公園の中を歩いて会社へ行く。

Every morning, I walk through the park on my way to work.

細い路地を抜けて川のそばへ行く。

I pass through a narrow alley and go to the riverside.

Structure: Put を after a place traversed and use a movement verb. The particle is pronounced お.
Basic usage: 公園の中を歩く presents the inside of the park as the route of movement.

Route and activity location
- 公園を歩く presents the park as a route traversed on foot; 公園で歩く presents it as the location of walking. The same space is described through different relationships.
Separate from the destination
- In 路地を抜けて川のそばへ行く, the alley is the route passed through and the riverside the destination. Do not treat route-marking を only as a transitive object's marker.
