Study notes

1. Origins, structure, and basic meaning

  • Structure: だから connects sentences by taking the previous statement as a reason.
  • Basic usage: The fact that there is an exam can lead to the decision to go to bed early.

2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions

  • Between and within sentences
    • 雨です。だから帰ります。 links two sentences; 雨だから帰ります gives a reason within one sentence using a noun plus だから. After a verb, connect the reason as in 雨が降るから帰ります.
  • Sequence and reason
    • それから introduces the next event, while だから links a judgment or action to the preceding reason. Being later in time does not alone create a reason-and-result relationship.
