per; for each

Follows a person or unit of quantity to express an amount or rate assigned to each unit.

Examples

参加費は一人当たり千円です。

The participation fee is one thousand yen per person.

この箱には一列当たり十個の果物を並べます。

We will arrange ten pieces of fruit in each row of this box.

参加者一人当たり、ペットボトルの水を二本用意しました。

We prepared two bottles of water for each participant.

Structure: Place 当たり（あたり） after a quantity unit to express an amount or rate per unit.
Basic usage: 参加費は一人当たり千円です。 sets the fee at one thousand yen for each participant.

The scope of the reference unit
- 一人当たり二本 means two bottles per person, while 一組当たり二本 means two bottles per whole group. The unit before 当たり sets the basis of allocation.
A rate and distribution
- 一人当たり千円 states an amount per unit, while 千円ずつ配る describes distributing one thousand yen at a time to each recipient. ずつ alone does not specify a unit such as a person or a group.
