Study notes

1. Origins, structure, and basic meaning

  • Structure: Change です after a noun or na-adjective stem to でした.
  • Basic usage: 昨日は祝日でした。 politely describes yesterday's status.

2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions

  • Past verbs and i-adjectives
    • Verbs use forms such as 行きました, and i-adjectives forms such as 高かったです. Do not attach the nominal ending でした unchanged to every predicate.
  • Modifying a noun
    • A sentence can end with 静かでした, but a past condition modifying a noun takes a plain form, as in 静かだった町. Distinguish sentence endings from noun modification.
