Attaches to a verb stem to show that an event came close to happening but did not actually occur.

Examples

話を聞いて、思わず泣きそうになった。

When I heard the story, I almost cried without meaning to.

階段で足を滑らせて、転びそうになりました。

I slipped on the stairs and almost fell.

熱い鍋に触れて、やけどしそうになった。

I touched the hot pot and nearly burned myself.

Structure: A verb's ます stem takes そうになる to describe reaching the verge of an event.
Basic usage: 階段で足を滑らせて、転びそうになりました。 describes almost falling after slipping on the stairs.

An imminent state and entering it
- 転びそうだ describes being likely to fall, while 転びそうになった describes coming into that state. The final なった foregrounds that transition.
Distinct from an event that occurred
- 転んだ states that a fall actually occurred. In this example, 転びそうになった describes coming close to falling rather than a completed fall.
