Follows the dictionary or negative form of a verb to express the speaker's specific intention regarding a future action.

Examples

大学を卒業したら故郷で働くつもりだ。

I intend to work in my hometown after graduating from college.

夏休みには祖父母の家を訪ねるつもりだ。

I plan to visit my grandparents during summer vacation.

来年は日本へ留学するつもりです。

I plan to study abroad in Japan next year.

Structure: A verb's dictionary form or ない form takes つもりだ.
Basic usage: 来年は日本へ留学するつもりです。 expresses an intention to study abroad next year.

Personal intention and a schedule
- 留学するつもりだ centers on personal intention, while 留学する予定だ centers on a planned schedule. They present different viewpoints on the same future action.
Position of negation
- 行かないつもりだ expresses an intention not to go; 行くつもりはない foregrounds having no intention of going. The latter can sound more like a refusal in context.
