〜ところを見ると

judging from

Infers a cause or situation from a visible state or an established fact used as a clue.

Examples

窓が濡れているところを見ると、夜に雨が降ったようだ。

Judging from the wet window, it seems to have rained during the night.

彼の表情が明るいところを見ると、安心したようだ。

Judging from his cheerful expression, he seems relieved.

電気が消えているところを見ると、もう閉店したようだ。

Judging from the fact that the lights are off, the store appears to have closed already.

Structure: ところを見ると follows a clause describing a state or fact and presents the observation as evidence for an inference.
Basic usage: 窓が濡れているところを見ると、夜に雨が降ったようだ。 uses the wet window as evidence to suggest that it rained during the night.

Inferring an earlier event from a current state
- 濡れている gives a remaining current state, while 降ったようだ infers earlier rain. The different tenses still form a coherent link between a clue and its cause.
Unlike viewing a physical place
- 表情が明るいところを見ると uses a cheerful expression as evidence. Here ところ does not refer to a separate physical place to visit and inspect.
