ていただく

have someone kindly do something

Follows the connective form of a verb to humbly express receiving the benefit of an action performed by someone deserving respect.

Examples

先輩に発表の資料を確認していただいた。

I had a senior colleague review my presentation materials.

先生に面接の練習をしていただいた。

I had my teacher help me practice for the interview.

Structure: A verb's て form takes いただく to humbly describe receiving the benefit of another person's action.
Basic usage: In 先輩に発表の資料を確認していただいた。, the speaker receives the benefit of having the materials reviewed.

The agent and the recipient
- In 私は先生に教えていただいた, the teacher teaches and the speaker receives the benefit. 先生が教えてくださった makes the teacher the grammatical subject.
The viewpoint of respect
- 教えてもらった and 教えていただいた both present receiving instruction, but the latter is a humble expression showing respect to the person helping. Sentence-final politeness can be marked separately, as in いただきました.
