Used with an expression of repeated time to show that an action continues as a regular practice or habit.

Examples

父は毎朝この道を走っている。

My father runs along this road every morning.

私は毎週日曜日に祖母へ電話している。

I call my grandmother every Sunday.

Structure: A verb's て form takes いる, with an expression indicating repeated times.
Basic usage: 父は毎朝この道を走っている。 describes the father's habit of running every morning.

Now and recurring times
- 今走っている describes running in progress now, while 毎朝走っている describes running every morning. Time expressions and context change the interpretation of the same ている.
A past habit
- 学生のころ毎日走っていた describes an activity repeated during a particular past period. The final いた places the viewpoint on the habit in the past.
