極まる

Attaches to an evaluative expression and emphatically declares that its degree has reached the limit.

Examples

事情を聞かずに責めるとは失礼極まる。

Blaming someone without hearing the circumstances is extremely rude.

その態度は無礼極まる。

That attitude is the height of rudeness.

客を無視するとは、不親切極まる態度だ。

Ignoring a customer is an extremely inconsiderate attitude.

Structure: Attach 極まる to the stem of an evaluative na-adjective, such as one expressing rudeness, to emphasize an extreme degree. 極まる is read きわまる.
Basic usage: その態度は無礼極まる。 strongly criticizes the attitude as extremely rude.

Connection without な
- In 不親切極まる態度, 極まる attaches directly to 不親切. Do not insert な as in 不親切な極まる.
Style of an extreme assessment
- 失礼極まる is more categorical and literary than とても失礼だ. Replacing a mild everyday assessment with it makes the tone stronger.
