Indicates that an influence or activity extends beyond the initially stated scope into a wider area.

Examples

新制度の影響は国内にとどまらず、海外にも及んだ。

The effects of the new system were not limited to the country but also reached overseas.

This problem is not limited to one town but affects a wide area.

その作家は小説にとどまらず、映画でも才能を発揮した。

Structure: Attach にとどまらず to a noun naming a scope to show an influence or activity extending beyond it into another area.
Basic usage: その作家は小説にとどまらず、映画でも才能を発揮した。 means that the writer showed talent in film as well as in novels.

The negative removes a scope limit
- 国内にとどまらず、海外にも does not deny an effect within the country; it extends the effect overseas as well. The following にも marks the added area.
The connective ず form
- とどまらず is the negative connective form of とどまる. To end a statement that something is not limited to an area, use a form such as 小説にとどまらない.
