1. Origins, structure, and basic meaning
- Structure: Attach
けどafter a clause's predicate. The formsけれどandけれどもare also used. - Basic usage: It connects a contrast or something contrary to expectation.
この靴は安いけど、少し重いです。presents both the advantage of a low price and the drawback of some extra weight.
2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions
- Connecting forms
- Verbs and i-adjectives connect as in
行くけどand安いけど. Plain affirmative nonpast nouns and na-adjectives take forms such as学生だけどand静かだけど, retainingだ.

けどis common in conversation but also combines with polite forms such asですけど. It is not automatically rude compared withが.

- A speaker can leave the next part unspoken and await a response, as in
