Indicates acting in the same way as an explanation, example, or set of directions.

Examples

先生が説明したとおりに棚を組み立てた。

I assembled the shelf just as the teacher explained.

説明書のとおりに部品を取り付けた。

I attached the parts according to the instructions.

地図に書いてあるとおりに歩きました。

I walked exactly as shown on the map.

Structure: Use とおりに after a verbal clause or a noun followed by の to describe acting in accordance with a model.
Basic usage: 説明書のとおりに部品を取り付けた。 describes attaching the parts in the manner given in the instructions.

とおり and どおり
- Read とおり after の, as in 説明のとおりに. In expressions directly attached to a noun, such as 予定どおりに, the form is どおり.
Matching a model and resembling it
- 見本のとおりに作る focuses on following the model's method or content. 見本のように作る describes making something similar and does not necessarily require the same degree of correspondence.
