たとえ〜ても

Indicates that the following judgment will not change even under an extreme hypothetical condition.

Examples

たとえ失敗しても、挑戦した経験は残る。

Even if you fail, the experience of taking on the challenge will remain.

たとえ失敗しても、もう一度挑戦したい。

Even if I fail, I want to try again.

たとえ雨が降っても、予定どおり出発します。

Even if it rains, we will leave as scheduled.

Structure: Use assumption-emphasizing たとえ with a ても・でも condition to keep the following judgment valid despite that condition.
Basic usage: たとえ雨が降っても、予定どおり出発します。 maintains the departure plan even if it rains.

Changing the plan and maintaining a judgment
- 雨が降ったら中止する makes rain a condition for changing the plan. たとえ雨が降っても出発する states that departure still holds under that assumed condition.
Connection by word class
- たとえ高くても買う uses an i-adjective's くても, while たとえ雨でも行く uses でも after a noun. The conditional form follows the preceding word class.
