Follows the potential form or an expression of habitual action to indicate a change in ability or way of life.

Examples

子どもが一人で起きられるようになった。

The child has become able to get up alone.

練習を重ねて、人前でも落ち着いて話せるようになった。

After repeated practice, I became able to speak calmly even in front of other people.

毎朝早く起きられるようになりました。

I have become able to get up early every morning.

Structure: A nonpast verb is followed by ようになる to describe a change in ability or habit.
Basic usage: 一人で起きられるようになった means becoming able to get up alone.

Ability and habit
- 泳げるようになった describes a change in swimming ability; 毎日泳ぐようになった describes a change in routine. Distinguish a potential verb from an ordinary action verb.
Effort and a resulting change
- 早く起きるようにする expresses an effort or policy to get up early. 早く起きるようになった describes the change whereby getting up early has become the practice.
