Follows a noun or adjective stem to express a change into a new status or state. It does not express a clause-level result determined by an external decision.

- Structure: A noun or na-adjective stem takes
になる. - Basic usage:

2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions
- Noun and adjective connections
大学生になるand静かになるconnect withに, but an i-adjective changes as in暖かくなる. A shared meaning of change does not make every attachment identical.
- Result and intervention
部屋が静かになるdescribes the room becoming quiet;部屋を静かにするdescribes making it quiet. Distinguish the resulting change from someone's intervention.
