Study notes

1. Origins, structure, and basic meaning

  • Structure: Use a verb's form followed by 後で; here is read あと.
    • 食べる → 食べた後で
  • Basic usage: It places the second action after the first action has finished.
    • 夕飯を食べた後で散歩します。 means taking a walk after eating dinner.

2. Common pitfalls and similar expressions

  • The た form for future actions
    • Even an action that has not happened yet takes the form when it is to be completed before the next action. This earlier does not make the whole sentence past tense.
  • Connecting a noun
    • A noun needs , as in 食事の後で. A verb connects directly, as in 食べた後で.
  • Compared with てから
    • 〜てから also expresses sequence and can give greater prominence to the first action as a prerequisite or starting point for the next.
    • 〜た後で does not by itself mean that there is no time gap between the actions.
