Examples

この店は料理が安い上に駅から近い。

The food at this restaurant is inexpensive, and what's more, it is close to the station.

この宿は景色が美しい上に食事もおいしい。

This inn has beautiful scenery, and the food is delicious as well.

このかばんは丈夫な上に軽い。

This bag is durable as well as lightweight.

Structure: Add 上に（うえに） to a plain clause, a noun followed by の, or a na-adjective followed by な to add another quality.
Basic usage: このかばんは丈夫な上に軽い。 presents durability and lightness as combined advantages.

The direction of the evaluation
- 安い上に近い combines advantages, while 高い上に遠い combines disadvantages. This builds evaluations in the same direction, unlike the contrast in 安いが遠い.
Addition and a prior step
- 上に in 丈夫な上に軽い adds a quality, while 上で in 確認した上で申し込む makes checking a step before applying. The relationship changes with に and で.
